Jainism, traditionally known as Jain Dharma, is an ancient Indian religion which traces its spiritual and historical ideas through the succession of twenty-four rulers or Tirthankaras, the first of the current cycle being Rishabhanatha, which is traditionally believed to have lived millions of years ago, the twenty-third tirthankara Parshvanatha that historians date to the 8th century BC, and the 24th tirthankara, Mahavira to around 600 BC. Jainism is considered an eternal teaching with the tirthankaras guiding all time cycles in cosmology. The main religious bases of the Jain teachings are ahisā, anekāntavāda, aparigraha and asceticism. Pious Jains have five main vows: ahiṃsā, satya, asteya, brahmacharya and aparigraha. These principles have influenced Jain culture in many ways, including leading to a predominantly vegetarian lifestyle. Parasparopagraho jīvānām is his motto and the mantra amōkāra is his most basic and popular prayer.
