Jair Messias Bolsonaro is a retired Brazilian politician and military officer, the 38th President of Brazil. Elected in 2018 as a member of the Conservative Social-Liberal Party before severing ties with them, he was in office from January 1, 2019. From 1991 to 2018, he sat in the Brazilian House of Representatives, representing the State of Rio de Janeiro. Bolsonaro was born in the city of Glicério, in the state of São Paulo. He graduated from the Agulhas Negras Military Academy in 1977 and served in the Brazilian Army's parachuting and field artillery units. He became public in 1986, when he wrote an article for Veja magazine criticizing the low salaries of military officers, after which he was arrested and detained for 15 days. A year later, the same magazine accused him of planning to place bombs in military units, but he denied. After being found guilty by a lower court, the Supreme Military Court of Brazil acquitted him in 1988.
