Samoan-American soccer player who made history as the first transgender player to play in a men's FIFA World Cup qualifying match. She made her national team debut for American Samoa at the age of 15 and has also played for Savage FC, an indoor soccer team.
Jaiyah Saelua is a Samoan American international football player. Saelua is a fa'afafine, a third gender present in Polynesian society, roughly translated as "the way of the woman". She is a member of the American Samoa National Football Team. She was the first openly transgender player to make the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Saelua appeared in the 2014 documentary Next Goal Wins. A feature film version of Next Goal Wins is planned. It stars Kaimana, an actress who is also a fa'afafine, like Saelua, and will be directed by Taika Waititi. Saelua is a former performing arts student who attended the University of Hawaii.
