From 2007 until 2011, this United States Marine Corps general, who received four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. From 2004 to 2007, he was the Commander of the United States Strategic Command.
James Edward "Hoss" Cartwright is a retired four-star Marine Lieutenant General who served as the eighth vice president of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from August 31, 2007 to August 3, 2007. 2011. Previously he served as Commander, Secretary of Strategy, United States. Commander from September 1, 2004 to August 10, 2007, and is Acting Commander, US Strategic Command from July 9, 2004 to September 1, 2004. He retired from the Marines on August 3, 2011, after almost 40 years of service. Cartwright was charged with providing confidential information published in David Sanger's book Confrontation and Anonymous. During the investigation, Cartwright agreed to be interviewed by the FBI without the presence of a lawyer. He was indicted for lying to the FBI about the time and place of his meetings with Sanger. Cartwright has never been charged with disclosing classified information; Sanger asserted that Cartwright did not provide him with any classified documents.
