Pop artist who is well-known for his bold, two- and three-dimensional depictions of American flags. He was frequently labeled as a Neo-Dadaist artist. From 1954 through 1955, his most well-known painting was"Flag", which was inspired by a dream.

From 1947 to 1948, he attended the University of South Carolina for three semesters. In 1949, he worked for the Parsons School of Design for a short time. From 1952 to 1953, he served in the Korean War, stationed in Sendai, Japan.
