Louis, Missouri, Tatum attended preschool at Chaminade College in his hometown, where he got a five-star rating and is considered one of the 2016 Class's top players according to the recruitment service. He played college basketball for Duke Blue Devils prior to joining the 2017 NBA Draft. He was selected with the third overall pick by the Boston Celtics. He won the 2019 Skills Challenge in NBA All-Star Weekend.
