Joseph Jacques Jean Chrétien is a Canadian politician who was the 20th Prime Minister of Canada from 1993 to 2003. Born and raised in Shawinigan, Quebec, Chrétien holds a law degree from Laval University. He was first elected to the Canadian House of Representatives in 1963. He has held various ministerial-level positions under the leadership of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, including Minister of Justice, Minister of Finance and Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. He is also Canada's second Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister in John Turner short-lived government. He became the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in 1990, serving as Leader of the opposition before it led to a majority of government in the 1993 federal elections. new numbers in 1997 and 2000.
