James Earl Carter Jr is an American politician, businessman and philanthropist who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. As a member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as a senator. Officer of the State of Georgia from 1963 to 1967 and was the 76th Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. Since leaving presidency, Carter has remained involved in political and social endeavors as a private citizen. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as co-founder of the Carter Center. Growing up on Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree and joined the US Navy, where he served on submarines. After his father's death in 1953, Carter abandoned his naval career and returned home to Georgia to take over the family's peanut growing business. Carter inherited relatively little due to his father forgiven his debt and divided the property among the children.
