Charles Edward Greene, also known as "Mean" Joe Greene, is a former professional American footballer who served as a defensive player for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football Federation from 1969 to 1981. Player of the year award the NFL, five first-team Pro Selection and Ten Pro Bowl Pro Bowl, Greene is widely regarded as one of the great defensive midfielders, the biggest competition in the NFL. He is known for his leadership, fierce competitiveness, and terrifying play style for which he has earned a nickname. Born and raised in Temple, Texas, Greene attended North Texas State University, where he earned the All-American Consensus title as a senior playing for the North Texas State Mean Green soccer team. He was ranked fourth by the Steelers in the 1969 NFL Draft and made an immediate influence on the team, named the NFL's Defense Rookie of the Year.
