John Davies Cale, OBE is a Welsh musician, songwriter, singer, songwriter, musician and record producer, a founding member of the American rock band The Velvet Underground. During his six-decade career, Cale has worked in a variety of styles on rock, drone, classical, avant-garde and electronic music. He studied music at Goldsmiths College, University of London, before moving to musical theater in downtown New York in 1963, where he performed as part of the Eternal Music Theater and founded Velvet Underground. Since leaving the group in 1968, Cale has released 16 solo studio albums, including the highly acclaimed Music for a New Society. Cale is also well known as an adventurous producer, working on debut albums by several creative artists, including Stooges and Patti Smith.
