John Wesley Dean III is a former lawyer who served as White House adviser to US President Richard Nixon from July 1970 to April 1973. Dean is known for his role in covering up the Watergate scandal and for his speech during his last testimony before Congress as a witness. His confession to a single felony in exchange for being a key prosecution witness ultimately resulted in a reduced sentence, which he served at Fort Holabird outside of Baltimore, Maryland. After his plea, he resigned his position as a lawyer. According to the FBI, Dean was the "master manipulator" of the Watergate affair. Immediately after the Watergate hearing, Dean wrote about his experiences in a series of books and visited the United States to make presentations. He later became a contemporary political commentator, book author and columnist for FindLaw's Writ. Dean was initially a supporter of Goldwater conservatism, but later became a critic of the Republican Party.
