John Robert Lewis is an American politician, politician, civil rights activist, and leader, serving in the United States House of Representatives for the 5th District of Georgia's Parliament from 1987 until his death in the year 2020. He served as President of the Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966. Lewis was one of the "Big Six" groups that met in March 1963 in Washington. He has fulfilled many important roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racism in the United States. In 1965, Lewis led among the three Selma Steps to Montgomery via the Edmund Pettus Bridge. During an incident known as Bloody Sunday, soldiers and state police attacked protesters, including Lewis. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis was first elected to Congress in 1986 and served 17 terms in the US House of Representatives. The county he represents includes most of Atlanta.
