Major served in the Thatcher government from 1987 to 1990 as Prime Minister of Exchequer and Business foreigners. Leader and Congressman for Huntingdon, formerly Huntingdonshire, 1979-2001. Major was born in St Helier, London. Graduating in 1959 with only three O degrees, after working various jobs and enduring a period of unemployment, Major began a career with Standard Bank. He was elected Councilor in Lambeth, then Congressman in the 1979 general election. He first served as Private Secretary to Parliament and Assistant Whip before joining the government as Minister. After the 1987 election he was promoted to Cabinet by Margaret Thatcher as Secretary of the Treasury.
