Avenged Sevenfold is an American heavy metal band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The group's current lineup includes lead vocals Mr. Shadows, rhythm guitarist and undersinger Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist and accompanist Synyster Gates, bassist and accompanist Johnny Christ and drummer Brooks Wackerman. Avenged Sevenfold is known for its varied rock sound and impressive visuals in album covers and merchandise. The band emerged with a metalcore sound in their debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and continued the sound through their second album Waking the Fallen. However, the band's style developed thanks to the band's third album and their first major label, City of Evil, towards styles of heavy metal and hard rock. The band continued to explore new sounds with releases under their own names and continued to achieve mainstream success before their drummer, James "The Rev" Sullivan, passed away in 2009.
