Colored Sergeant Johnson Gideon Beharry, VC, COG as a British Army soldier, on 18 March 2005, received the Victorian Cross, the highest military decoration for bravery in the armed forces of England and the Commonwealth, for having rescued members of his unit, the 1st Princess Battalion of the Royal Welsh Regiment, from the ambushes on 1 May and again on June 11, 2004 in Al-Amarah, Iraq. He suffered a serious head injury during this last engagement. Beharry was officially invested by Queen Elizabeth II with the Victorian cross on April 27, 2005.
