Thomas Jonathan Ossoff has been a senior US politician from Georgia since 2021. As a member of the Democratic Party, Ossoff was a former documentary film producer and investigative journalist. Ossoff was the Democratic candidate in the 2017 special election for Georgia's 6th electoral district, which has long been considered a Republican stronghold. The special election proved to be competitive. It captured the nation's attention and became the most expensive House of Representatives election in U.S. history. Ossoff lost the race to Karen Handel. In mid-2020, Ossoff won the Democratic nomination for the 2020 U.S. Senate election in Georgia to run with sitting Republican Senator David Perdue. Neither candidate reached the 50% threshold in the November 3 general election, triggering a contagion election on January 5, 2021, for which Ossoff won.
