Previously, he served as Auxiliary Bishop of Denver from 2001 to 2004 and Archbishop of San Antonio from 2004 to 2010. Effective November 15, 2016, Gomez served as Vice President the American Council of Catholic Bishops; His term as vice president ended with his election as president on November 12, 2019.
