José Moreno Hernández is a former NASA astronaut and American engineer. Hernández was assigned to the crew of the STS-128 space shuttle. He is also the head of the Johnson Space Center Materials and Process branch. Hernández previously developed school-wide digital mammography equipment at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Hernández left NASA in 2011. In October 2011, Hernández, at the urging of President Barack Obama, to run for Congress as a Democrat in the 10th California electoral district to be redrawn in the United States House of Representatives . He won the Democratic nomination, but lost the 2012 general election to outgoing Rep. Jeff Denham, a freshman.
