Muscat was re-elected as Prime Minister in the election. elected on June 3, 2017. Before that, he was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008. He was Leader of the Opposition from October 2008 to March 2013. Muscat identifies as a progressive and liberal politician, pro-business, both linked to self-politics, economic and social freedom. Muscat succeeded Alfred Sant as head of the party in 2008. He changed its name to the Labor Party, which sought increasing centrality and social freedom. The 2013 general election saw Muscat become prime minister in March 2013. His position as Prime Minister was marked for bringing a national consensus to economic growth, based on a restructured Malta economy.
