Cassia Joy Cowley is a New Zealand author known for her children's novels, including famous work Mrs. Wishy-Washy. She began writing adult novels, and her first book, Nest in a Falling Tree, was adapted for the screen by Roald Dahl. It became the 1971 film The Night Digger. Following his success in the United States, Cowley wrote a number of other novels, including The Straw Man, The Man's and the Angels, The Mandrake Stump, and The Growing Season. The typical themes of these works are infidelity, mental illness and death as experienced in families. Cowley has also published a number of short stories, including Two of a Kind and Heart Attack and Others. Today, she is known for her children's books, such as The Silent One, which was made into a movie in 1985. Others include Bow Down Shadrach and its sequel, Gladly, Here. I Come.
