Following his success in the United States, Cowley wrote a number of other novels, including The Straw Man, The Man's and the Angels, The Mandrake Stump, and The Growing Season. The typical themes of these works are infidelity, mental illness and death as experienced in families. Cowley has also published a number of short stories, including Two of a Kind and Heart Attack and Others.
