Dame Judith Olivia Dench is an English actress. She started professionally in 1957 with Old Vic Company. Over the following years, she appeared in several Shakespeare plays, such as Ophelia in Hamlet, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. While most of Dench's work during this time was in theaters, she also moved to film and won the BAFTA as the Most Promising Newcomer. In 1968 she received many excellent reviews for the lead role Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. Over the next two decades, Dench established himself as one of Britain's most important theater artists, working for the National Theater Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She received critical acclaim for her television work during this time, in the featured series A Fine Romance and As Time Goes By.
