Blume's books have made a significant contribution to literature for children and young people. Blume was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and graduated from New York University in 1961. In an attempt to entertain her as a housewife, Blume began writing stories. During her life, Blume was married three times. In 2020, she has three children and a grandson.
