About Julie Payette
Chief Astronaut of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2007. She was a part of the STS 96 and 127 missions. She was appointed Governor General of Canada in 2017.
Julie Payette is an engineer, scientist and former Canadian astronaut who served as President of Canada from 2017 to 2021, the 29th since the Federation of Canada. Payette holds engineering degrees from McGill University and the University of Toronto. She worked as a research scientist before joining the Canadian Space Agency in 1992 as a member of the Canadian Astronaut Army. She completed two spacecraft, STS-96 and STS-127, and was connected in space for more than 25 days. She also served as a capsule communications officer at the NASA Mission Control Center in Houston and from 2000 to 2007 as the CSA Senior Astronaut. In July 2013, Payette was appointed Executive Director of the Montreal Science Center. She also held several positions on the board, including the National Bank of Canada. On 13 July 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Queen Elizabeth II had approved Payette's appointment as Canada's next Governor-General. It was invested on October 2, 2017 .
