Switzer rose to recognition as the first female runner in the Boston Marathon in 1967, and her memoir Marathon Woman was published in 2007. She enrolled under the name"K.V. Switzer" because women were not allowed to compete in the race at the time.

Kathrine Virginia Switzer is an American marathon runner, author and television commentator. In 1967, she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor. During his race, race director Jock Semple repeatedly assaulted Switzer, trying to take his jersey number and prevent him from competing. After knocking down Switzer's trainer and fellow runner Arnie Briggs as he tried to protect her, Semple was knocked down by Switzer's boyfriend Thomas Miller, who was running with her, on the ground. The AUA banned women from competing with men as a result of its run, and it wasn't until 1972 that the Boston Marathon established a formal race for women.
