Born in Hong Kong, Kaif lived in several countries before settling in London. She took up her modeling job as a teenager and then pursued a career in modeling. During a London fashion show, Indian filmmaker Kaizad Gustad decided to cast her in Boom, a critical and commercial failure. While in India, Kaif received modeling assignments and managed to become a model, however, the filmmakers were reluctant to hire her due to her poor command of the Hindi language. After appearing in the Telugu film Malliswari, Kaif achieved commercial success in Bollywood with the romantic comedy Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? and Namastey London. After that, she achieved a string of box office hits, but was criticized for her acting, repetitive roles, and penchant for male lead films.
