About Kendra Herrin

She and her sister Maliyah Herrin became the first conjoined twins with a shared kidney to be separated in August 2006. Maliyah received a donated kidney from her mother, when she owned the kidney.

Kendra Deene Herrin and Maliyah Mae Herrin were previously joint twins. They separated in August 2006. They were the first Siamese twins separated to share a kidney. Kendra had retained their articular kidney after the separation surgery, while Maliyah Herrin had to undergo dialysis until she received a kidney transplant from her mother in April 2007. Prior to the separate surgery, the Ethics Focuses medical professionals in the United States and Europe have discussed whether it is ethical to separate the twins because of the additional risk to Maliyah. Their families and doctors believe that the detachment surgery will give the two girls the best chance of leading a normal life.
