Author of the bestselling novels The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, who was born in Afghanistan. And the Mountains Echoed, his third novel, was released in 2013.
Khaled Hosseini is a novelist, doctor, activist, humanitarian and goodwill ambassador of the Afghan-American UNHCR. After graduating from college, he worked as a doctor in California, a predicament he called "an arranged marriage." He has published three novels, including his 2003 debut, The Kite Runner, all set partly in Afghanistan and with Afghans as the main character. After the success of The Kite Runner, he retired from medicine to write a full-time journal. Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father was a diplomat, and when Hosseini was 11, the family moved to France; Four years later, they applied for asylum in the United States, where he then naturalized. Hosseini did not return to Afghanistan until 2001 at the age of 36, where he "felt like a tourist in his own country".
