Larry Joe Bird is a former American professional basketball player, coach and executive of the National Basketball Association. Nicknamed "the Hick of French Lick" and "Larry Legend", Bird is considered by many to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Growing up in French Lick, Indiana, he was a local basketball player. Highly selected, he first signed to play for Indiana Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight, but dropped out after a month and returned to French Lick to attend a local community college. The following year, he attended the smaller Indiana State University, eventually playing three years for Sycamores. Drafted by the Boston Celtics with a sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, after his sophomore year in Indiana, Bird chose to stay in college and play another season.
