Larry Holmes is a former professional American boxer who competed from 1973 to 2002. He grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, where his boxing nickname was the Easton Assassin. Holmes, whose left-shot ranks among the best in boxing history, held the WBC heavyweight belt from 1978 to 1983, The Ring magazine and linear heavyweight titles from 1980 to year. 1985, and the first heavyweight IBF title from 1983 to 1985. During his reign, he defended his title against 19 boxers, the second most in history after Joe Louis and the most since boxing governing bodies expanded internationally. Holmes is the only fighter to stop Muhammad Ali and is the only one alive to defeat Ali. Holmes won his first 48 professional matches, including victories against Ken Norton, Ali, Earnie Shavers, Mike Weaver, Gerry Cooney, Tim Witherspoon, Carl Williams and Marvis Frazier.
