Mary Violet Leontyne Price is an American soprano, the first African-American soprano to receive international acclaim. From 1961, she began a long-term attachment to the Metropolitan Opera House, where she was the first African American to become an outstanding performer. She performed regularly at the world's greatest opera houses, the Royal Opera House, the San Francisco Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera and La Scala, the theater she later became the first African-American.
