Linus Benedict Torvalds is a Finnish-American software engineer, creator and historically the main developer of the Linux kernel, used by Linux distributions and other operating systems such as Android and Chrome OS. It also creates a distributed Git change control system and cave dive planning and logging software. Along with Shinya Yamanaka, he received the Millennium Technology Award 2012 from the Finnish Institute of Technology "in recognition of his work in creating a new open source operating system for computers directed to the widespread use of the Linux kernel. . " He is also the recipient of the 2014 IEEE Computer Association Computer Pioneer Award and the 2018 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award.
