Lois Lowry is an American writer. She is the author of several books for children and adolescents, including The Giver Quartet, Number the Stars and Rabble Starkey. She is known to write about difficult subjects, confusing subjects and complex subjects in works aimed at young audiences. Lowry won two Newbery medals: Number the Stars in 1990 and The Giver in 1994. His book Gooney Bird Greene won the Rhode Island Children's Book Award in 2002. Many of his books were disputed or banned in schools and libraries, notably The Giver, a mandatory program at other schools.
