Lori Elaine Lightfoot is an American lawyer and politician, the 56th and current mayor of Chicago. She has been in service since 2019. Prior to becoming mayor, Lightfoot worked in the private legal sector as a partner with Mayer Brown and held various government positions in the city of Chicago. Most notably, she served as chair of the Chicago Police Council and chair of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force. Lightfoot ran for mayor of Chicago in 2019, running a flow election against Toni Preckwinkle in the February 2019 election. She defeated Preckwinkle in the second round on April 2, 2019. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Lightfoot is the first openly lesbian African-American woman elected as mayor of a major US city. In addition, she is the second woman and the third African-American - after Harold Washington and Eugene Sawyer - to serve as mayor of Chicago.
