Lothar Herbert Matthäus is a former German football player and coach. After winning the 1990 FIFA World Cup with West Germany, where he won the World Cup, he was named the Best Player in Europe. In 1991, he was named FIFA's Player of the Year and remains the only German to receive the award. He is also part of the Dream Team Ballon d'Or in 2020. Matthäus held a record of playing five World Cups, more than any other player in men's football, until the 2018 World Cup, in which Mexican Rafael Marquez equalized his record and held the record for number of World Cup matches a player plays most. He was the captain of the West Germany squad that won the 1990 World Cup in Italy and also the captain of the German team at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. He also won the UEFA Euro 1980 and played at the UEFA European Championships 1984, 1988 and 2000
