Luka Modrić is a Croatian professional footballer who plays in midfield for Spanish club Real Madrid and captain of the Croatian national team. He mainly plays in the central midfielder, but can also play as an attacking midfielder or defensive midfielder, often deployed as a deep back midfielder. He is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation and the greatest Croatian player of all time. Born in Zadar, Modrić's childhood coincided with Croatia's War of Independence, which forced his family out of life. In 2002, he was signed by Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 16, after making a promise to the youth team at home club NK Zadar. He continued to develop in Zagreb, before being loaned out at Zrinjski Mostar and Inter Zaprešić. He made his Dinamo debut in 2005 and won three consecutive championships and the National Cup, named Prva HNL's Player of the Year in 2007.
