In 2007, a British child went missing in Portugal while on vacation with her family. Her case is regarded as one of the most widely publicized missing-person cases in recent history.

Madeleine Beth McCann disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment at a resort in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve region of Portugal. The Daily Telegraph described the disappearance as "the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history". Her whereabouts remain unknown, and German prosecutors in 2020 have stated that they assume that she is dead. Madeleine was on holiday from the UK with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann; her two-year-old twin siblings; and a group of family friends and their children. She and the twins had been left asleep at 20:30 in the ground-floor apartment, while the McCanns and friends dined in a restaurant 55 metres away. The parents checked on the children throughout the evening, until Kate discovered she was missing at 22:00.

Gerry and Kate McCann, her parents, left Madeleine sleeping in her hotel room in Portugal while they dined at the hotel's restaurant. They kept checking on Madeleine and noticed she was missing at 10 p.m. Sean and Amelie, her twin siblings, were two years old at the time of her disappearance and shared a bedroom.
