Margaret Avery is an American actress and singer. She started her career on stage and went on to star in films such as Cool Breeze, Way Is Up ?, Scott Joplin and The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. Avery is best known for her role as Shug Avery in the 1985 television series The Color Purple for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to appear in films such as Blueberry Hill, White Man's Burden, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, Meet the Browns and Proud Mary. In 2013, Avery began playing Helen Patterson, the mother of the main character, in the BET Being Mary Jane television series.
