Singer-songwriter best recognized for her work in Japanese city pop music. She has become one of Japan's best-selling artists, selling over 15 million records throughout her career.

Mariya Takeuchi is a Japanese singer and songwriter. Considered an influential figure in the urban pop genre, she is one of the best-selling music artists in Japan, having sold more than 16 million records and received several awards. Takeuchi was born in Taisha, Hikawa prefecture, now Izumo town, Shimane, and attended Keio University. She started singing after signing with the RCA label in 1978, with which she released her debut album Beginning, which reached number 17 on Oricon Charts. She went on to release four albums from 1979 to 1981, all with commercial success, including the 1980's Love Songs album, becoming her first work to hit No. 1 on the Table. Oricon ratings. Takeuchi then announced that she would be on hiatus in 1981, ending her contract with RCA records.
