Mark Edward Kelly is an American politician, businessman, former astronaut and retired US Navy captain, who has been a subordinate US Senator of Arizona since 2020. Member of the Citizen Party owner, he won the 2020 special election, beating incumbent Republican Martha McSally. Formerly an aerospace consultant and executive, Kelly is the author of several books. Kelly performed combat missions during the Gulf War as a naval pilot before being selected as NASA's space shuttle pilot in 1996. He flew his first space mission in the year. 2001 as an STS-108 pilot, flew STS-121 in 2006 and commanded STS-124 in 2008 and STS-134 in 2011, the final mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Her identical twin Scott Kelly is also a retired astronaut; they are the only siblings to travel together in space. Kelly's wife, then Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords, was shot and nearly killed in an assassination on January 8, 2011. Six people died in the Tucson shooting.

After his wife Gabrielle Giffords survived a gunshot wound to the head in Tucson, Arizona, the two wrote a book about their experiences in helping her recover. Claudia and Claire are their two daughters. Scott Kelly, his brother, was also an astronaut.
