Barzani was born in the Republic of Mahabad and succeeds my father, Mustafa Barzani. was the leader of the KDP in 1979. Working closely with his brother Idris Barzani until Idris's death, Barzani and many other Kurdish groups fought with Iran against the Iraqi army during the Iran-Iraq war. Barzani has played an important role in the development of politics in the Kurdistan region since the aftermath of the Gulf War.
