He played college football for the University of Central Florida and was initially signed to the Lions as an untrained free player in 2006. Prater holds the NFL record for longest goal scoring. on the field, which he made up on December 8, 2013 as a member of the Denver Broncos against the Tennessee Titans in the first half as time passed. He also holds the NFL record for most on-field goals in his career 50 yards or more and the Detroit Lions franchise record for the longest away goal, which he set on 23 August. 2019. He was fired by Denver Broncos after completing his suspension for violating NFL drug addiction policy. With the Lions in the 2016 and 2017 season, Prater set an NFL record for back-to-back field goal conversions of over 50 yards and over 55 yards.
