He is also Federal Secretary of the Northern League. from December 2013. He is a senator in the Italian Senate. as of March 2018. Prior to that, he was a Member of the European Parliament for the Northwest Italy electoral district from 2004 to 2018. He is considered a tough European politician who has severe criticism of the European Union, especially against the euro. Salvini opposes illegal immigration to Italy and the EU, as well as the EU's management of asylum seekers. He is also considered one of the main leaders of the populist wave that shocked Europe in 2010 and a member of the neo-nationalist movement, whose far-right ideology emphasizes non-position, globalization, populism and protectionism. Salvini has been nicknamed "Captain" by his supporters.
