Michelle Lynn Johnson, known as Meshell Ndegeocello, is an American singer-songwriter, rapper and bassist. She went under the Meshell Suhaila Bashir-Shakur name, which is used as writing credit for some of her later work. His music incorporates a variety of influences including funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, reggae and rock. She has received critical acclaim throughout her career, has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards and won one. She is also said to have helped "arouse the new soul movement".
