His roles in the 1970s included Get Carter, The Last Valley, Sleuth, The Man Who would Be King, and A Bridge Too Far. He won a second Oscar nomination for Sleuth and achieved some of his most significant hits of the 1980s, with Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill and Educating Rita earning him a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.
