Michael Carrick is a former English professional football player and coach, currently working as a first team coach at Manchester United. He is one of the best English footballers of all time and is best known for a 12-year career with Manchester United, a team in which he is also captain. Carrick is the central midfielder, but he has been used as an emergency central defender under Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho. His style of play is based on his passing ability. Carrick started his career at West Ham United, joined the youth team in 1997 and won the FA Youth Cup two years later. He was on loan twice in his first season, to Swindon Town and Birmingham City, before securing a first-team place in the 2000-01 season. He went through relegation in the 2002–03 season and was voted PFA Premier League's Best Team for the next campaign.
