Michael Alan Sam Jr is a former American professional soccer player who played defensively. Sam played college football for the Missouri Tigers and was recruited by St. Louis Rams of the National Football League in the seventh round of the NFL Draft in 2014. He played a season for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football Federation. Sam is the American consensus player and defensive player of the year at the Southeast Conference as a senior in Missouri. After finishing his college football career, Sam became openly gay. He became the first openly gay player to enlist in the NFL. Rams hit him in the cut team at the end of last season. He also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys practice team before being exempted. He signed for the 2015 Montreal preseason and became the first openly gay player to play in the CFL.
