Michel Miguel Elias Temer Lulia is a Brazilian politician, lawyer and writer who served as the 37th President of Brazil from August 31, 2016 to January 1, 2019. He took office after his predecessor Dilma Rousseff was deposed and removed from office . He has been vice-president since 2011 and has served as president since May 12, 2016, when Rousseff's powers and duties were suspended pending an impeachment trial. At 75, he is the oldest person to take office. The Senate 61-20 vote on August 31, 2016 to remove Rousseff from his position meant that Temer had succeeded him and would serve the remainder of his second term. In his first ruling speech, Temer called for a government to "save the country" and demanded the trust of the Brazilian people. He also showed intention to overhaul the pension system and labor law as well as to cut public spending.
