Michael Joseph McCarthy is a professional football manager, expert and former footballer. He is currently the coach of Cardiff City in the EFL Championship. Born in Barnsley, England to an Irish father, he played for the Republic of Ireland 57 times and scored two goals. McCarthy began his competitive career at Barnsley in 1977 and has since played for Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon and finally Millwall, retiring in 1992. He then ruled Millwall, then the Republic of Ireland. He guided Ireland to the knockout stages of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan. He continues to lead Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town. He began his second term as manager of the Republic of Ireland football team in November 2018, resigning in April 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic after guiding the team to a position. qualifiers for Euro 2020.
