Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra is a Spanish writer considered by many to be the greatest Spanish writer and one of the most famous novelists in the world. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote, a work often considered the first modern novel and one of the peaks of world literature. Much of his life was spent in poverty and obscurity, many details contested or unknown, and much of his living work was produced in the three years before his death. However, his literary influence and contributions are reflected in the fact that Spanish is often referred to as "the language of Cervantes". In 1569, Cervantes was forced to leave Spain and move to Rome, where he worked in the house of a cardinal. In 1570, he joined an infantry regiment of the Spanish Navy and was badly wounded at the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571 .
