Miloš Zeman is a Czech politician who served as the third and incumbent President of the Czech Republic since 8 March 2013. Before that, he served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2002. As leader of the Czech Social Democratic Party in the 1990s, he made his party one of the main political forces in the country. Zeman was Speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Czech Parliament, from 1996 until he became Prime Minister two years later in 1998. In January 2013, Zeman was elected President of the Czech Republic. He was the first directly elected president in Czech history; his two predecessors, Václav Havel and Václav Klaus, were elected by the Czech Parliament. In 2018, he was re-elected for a second term. Zeman has been described as "one of the most Kremlin-friendly leaders in the European Union."
